Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters
New research suggests that individuals who come off new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication points out that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals using such treatments should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to starting weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural management.
