Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Group
Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of heroes, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces expanding in influence within the city.
Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of Campaign 4 follow below.
The Soldiers Table Unveiled
The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the primary party to begin their separate journey, apart from the remaining groups.
This warrior group features the determined fighter (portrayed by Travis), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).
Why Split the Party?
Given 13 cast members, it was obvious from the start that having everyone at the same party would be impossible.
Hence, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, weaving together the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.
What Defines the Warrior Group
Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who prefer a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.
Initially, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might look unsuited, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the Soldiers table.
Why They Must Go
To begin with, the group understands precisely where to head next after a violent initial meeting with the enemy group.
An old friend of Thjazi—whose demise started the campaign’s events—exploited The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, striking the rogue, and taking all the magical artifacts to dispose of.
The antagonist then settled his obligations and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, above Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.
Personal Motivations
Secondly, each member has a individual motive to depart the urban setting:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks vengeance.
- The knowledgeable figure is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a nasty place.
- The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his relatives’ demands to execute the target and instead saved him, have no safe haven.
- However, their reputation as important members in the influential clan could help the group reach places they usually can’t.
- Moreover, The fighter vowed a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his rescue and will now follow him wherever.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control Dol-Makjar for a range of causes, making remaining behind dangerous:
- Thimble and The hero are known criminals.
- The strong figure and The healer defied House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- The fighter is marked for death by the family.
This results in them little choice but to head to the remote area in search of Casimir.
Upcoming Developments
From episode three’s Cooldown, we learn that the warrior group will be absent the following episode, leaving the remaining eight participants to assemble the Explorers and Strategists tables.
Audiences can look forward to discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the story’s last Overture episode, released on October 24.
